In the Kingdom of Shadows

Artist Conversation & Film Screening

Saturday 19th November 2011 - 2:00pm - 5:00pm

Zoe Beloff will be in conversation with leading British film theorist Laura Mulvey. Laura Mulvey has changed the way we think about film and the experience of watching. Join Mulvey and Beloff as they discuss some of the ideas behind Zoe’s work.

Join us for a one-off screening of films by Beloff followed by the discussion.  The screening will include of Beloff’s stereoscopic, 3D 16mm films exploring the prehistory of cinema, not simply from the point of view of technology but from a psychic perspective; how the projection of images grew out of the desire to manifest the unconscious. “Shadow Land or Light from the Other Side” is based on the 1897 autobiography of Elizabeth d’Esperance, an English medium who could conjure up full body apparitions. “Charming Augustine” is inspired by series of photographs and texts on hysteria published by the great insane asylum in Paris in the 1880s under the title of the Iconographie photographique de la Salpetriere.

Zoe Beloff

The Infernal Dream of Mutt and Jeff

18 November 2011 - 21 January 2012

Site Gallery is delighted to present a new work by US based, Scottish born artist Zoe Beloff. This is a world premier of a new commission and exhibition where Beloff turns the gallery into a film studio, combining the screening of a new film, with a physical re-creation of the film set, alongside some extraordinary archival film footage, producing an all-consuming experience.

Zoe Beloff considers herself a medium, an interface between the living and the dead, the real and the imaginary. Her work includes film, installation, drawing, interactive media and performance.
